Precautionary measures following dog deaths

In light of the recent reported incidents of dogs and other wildlife becoming ill and dying after being on North Shore city beaches, Auckland City Council is advising people to exercise caution when visiting beaches in the Auckland city and Hauraki Gulf Islands area.

The council will not be closing Auckland city beaches at this stage. Toxin testing from the affected animals is being undertaken and the council is awaiting the results.

In the meantime, people are advised to be particularly careful with dogs and children on beaches, avoid eating shellfish collected locally, and avoid removing seawater for any use such as in fish tanks.

City Development General Manager John Duthie said the council was taking a precautionary approach in advising people to use beaches with care.

“We are awaiting confirmation from laboratory tests about the cause of the dogs’ illnesses and will follow regional guidance on the steps we need to take in the interests of public safety,” says Mr Duthie.
