A toast to first class drinking water

12 August 2009
A toast to first class drinking water

This month the excellent quality of North Shore’s drinking water was awarded with an ‘a’ rating from the Ministry of Health.

North Shore City has one of the highest quality water supply systems in the world. Every day, North Shore residents are provided with safe, high quality drinking water at the turn of a tap. This service is recognised through the public health grading from the Auckland Regional Public Health Service.

The North Shore City Council has an ‘Aa’ grading. The capital letter (A) represents the grade of the water coming into the zone and the lower-case letter (a) indicates the quality of the water received at the gate (North Shore’s own water reticulation system).

Water Supply Operations Manager, Shi-See Tan, was pleased with the result. “The team works really hard to maintain an excellent system for North Shore residents. It takes a lot of work, but knowing that the water that comes straight from the tap is some of the best is the world is something we can all be proud of.”

The grading system is a ‘risk based’ assessment - it is a measure of confidence that NSCC has taken all practical steps to ensure safe drinking water has been provided.
The council works hard to keep this top grading through an active preventative maintenance programme to ensure that the water supply service to residents is of a consistently high quality.

NSCC owns around 1,300 km of watermains, 13,000 valves, 7,000 fire hydrants and provides to over 75,000 customers on the North Shore.
