Sporting Rivalry to Take Centre Stage

Sporting Rivalry to Take Centre Stage in the Capital

Quicksteps and side steps; wit and big hits; punchlines and try lines – a rugby double header like no other is set to hit Wellington this weekend.

The second STAGE of Origin Provincial Challenge is scheduled to follow the Air NZ Cup Ranfurly Shield clash between Wellington and Auckland at Westpac Stadium on Saturday 22 August.

The STAGE of Origin charity event on Sunday will pit Wellington rugby and league representatives against their Auckland counterparts in an event that literally puts the ‘sports’ in theatre sports.

Featuring impromptu challenges, acting, song and dance – the STAGE of Origin last year saw Auckland lose to Wellington’s celebrity team of rugby players Victor Vito, Karl Te Nana and actors Robbie Magasiva & Tofiga Fepulea’I, despite enjoying a home crowd advantage.

Vito will lead the Wellington team on home turf this year, but Auckland is reportedly ready to make amends, bringing in the fancy footwork of Dancing with the Stars finalist Monty Betham.

Positively Wellington Tourism Chief Executive David Perks encourages Auckland fans to come down and support their team.

“They’ve got a score to settle and they’re up against representatives from the cultural capital so it won’t be easy. We’re looking forward to our boys humiliating their Auckland counterparts both on and off the field, but we’d like them to at least put up a fight – so they’ll need plenty of support.”

Tickets for STAGE of Origin at Michael Fowler Centre are available at Ticketek. Visit www.stageoforigin.com for more details.
