Cycling for Sustainability, Wellington Waterfront

Cycling for Sustainability, Wellington Waterfront
St John’s on the Wellington Waterfront, Wellington, 11:45am Saturday 22 August 2009

Wellington cyclists and members of 350 Aotearoa are coming together this Saturday in an event to celebrate cycling and the opportunities it provides for low carbon lifestyles.

350 Aotearoa will be at the event joined by cycle groups from Wellington, including Cycle Aware Wellington (CAW) and Frocks on Bikes.

Mountain Biking Olympian Kashi Leuchs will also be there to ride with Wellington cyclists and make a statement about climate protection.

At 11.45 the cyclists will be making a giant 350 sign out of themselves and their bikes. They will then go for a short ride around the city, emphasising the need for safe cycle lanes in the city as they go. Organiser Christina Bellis says “cycling is a convenient, free and fun way to get around which has health benefits and also lessens our carbon footprint.”

The event is also be part of the lead-up for the Great Harbour Way cycle event planned for 350’s international Day of Action on climate change on October 24.
Groups in around 100 countries all over the world will be taking part in the October 24 day of action to raise awareness about the number 350, ahead of December’s international climate change summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. Many are calling the summit the most important international negotiations ever, saying it is the world’s last chance to avert climate catastrophe. 350 is the number of parts per million of carbon in the atmosphere that the latest science tells us is safe for the environment.
