For Immediate Release 28 August 2009
Auckland Prison
returns to business as usual
The Department of Corrections says Auckland Prison has now been fully unlocked and the Prison has returned to normal operations following yesterdays hostage situation.
Northern Regional Manager Warren Cummins says that prisoner Baker has been placed in segregation. The hostage has been seen by medical staff and is being offered all appropriate support.
“Hostage situations in New Zealand prisons are rare. But given we manage the most volatile and dangerous people in our society these type of incidents can sometimes occur in a prison,” says Mr Cummins.
Mr Cummins praised the actions of the staff last night who ensured a peaceful resolution of the incident.
“We regularly practice for these types of situations and our training really paid off last night. In fact, we practiced a very similar situation at the prison in May.
“The staff and managers last night were fantastic. They successfully contained the situation and maintained contact with Baker throughout the incident. Their skills ensured a peaceful resolution to the incident and their actions are to be commended.”
The incident occurred in the Special Needs Unit in the East Division of the Prison. The Special Needs Unit is where prisoners with psychological and behavioral needs are housed so that they can receive the specialised care they require.
Mr Cummins again thanked the Police for their quick response and the advice and support they provided throughout the incident.
“We will now be undertaking a full review into the incident and the Police will be conducting their own investigation to decide what charges will be laid.”
The Department will be making no further comment on the incident while these activities are underway.
