Bike Pencarrow a great family day out
It’s time to pump up the tyres, pack a picnic and get the family bikes out for the Avanti Plus Lower Hutt Bike Pencarrow mountain bike ride on Sunday 29 November.
Mayor David Ogden, a keen cyclist, recommends the ride as “a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with the kids while discovering landmarks of our region’s past.”
This annual event offers two fun options for cyclists of all ages – 13 or 18 km return. Starting at Burden’s Gate in Eastbourne, the route winds its way along the east-harbour gravel track to the historic Pencarrow Lighthouse.
The extended 18km option offers scenic views as it continues around Cook Strait‘s rugged windswept coast and Lake Kohangatera arriving at the 1906 shipwreck of the steamer Paiaka.
Taken at a leisurely pace, the ride will take families about two to three hours to complete.
Drink stations and a toilet along the route will keep the ride hassle-free for everyone.
The ride is $5 per person (under 5s are free) and cyclists can register in advance by visiting www.bikepencarrow.co.nz or calling Leisure Active on 560 0307 during normal business hours.
Spot prizes are up for grabs including chances to win a bike courtesy of Avanti Plus Lower Hutt.
