Advice after tsunami warning [8.43]
30 September 2009
Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management is urging people living or working on the Waikato region’s coasts to be on high alert for tsunami warning information.
It follows an earthquake in Samoa which has prompted a tsunami warning for the coasts of New Zealand.
“There is no confirmation that a tsunami is heading our way at present,” said Waikato CDEM group controller Scott Fowlds.
“But Waikato people on the coasts need to be alert for further information and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.
“Detailed evacuation advice will come from Waikato local authorities and emergency services, and people need to act promptly if instructed to evacuate.
“Local emergency action plans for the east coast and the west coast of the region are ready to be implemented.”
Mr Fowlds urged people at potential risk to stay tuned to local radio stations.
