Council and students work together on park upgrade

Parkway Park is set to get an obstacle course thanks to Hutt City Council and a group of enterprising students from Wainuiomata High School.

Work begins today on installing the course which is the first stage of a three year partnership to refurbish the playground.

The year 13 technology students jumped at the chance to get involved in the scheduled upgrade of the Wainuiomata park offering an adventurous solution.

The commando styled course is a change from more conventional designs while encouraging more challenging activities.

Mayor David Ogden says “it’s great that council has been able to provide support with technical advice and funding for the project.

“I congratulate the students for their input.

“It’s a unique opportunity for the students to use their skills to create something that benefits the community.”

The students were involved in all stages of the planning process and have picked up project management skills, knowledge about community consultation and how the consent process works.

Student Garrick Gemmell designed an interactive entry feature for the park and describes the experience as “a privilege to be able to put our mark on the community”.
