Ports of Auckland
welcomes Pacific Pearl
Ports of Auckland Managing Director Jens Madsen today welcomed news that P&O Cruises’ Pacific Pearl would be launched and based in Auckland for the 2010-2011 cruise season.
“Ports of Auckland has worked hard to help establish Auckland as New Zealand’s premier exchange port for cruise ships,” said Mr Madsen. “This means many calling ships now finish and begin cruises here, increasing the gains for the tourism and hospitality industries.”
“Cruise is a major growth industry for the region. In just three years, the number of cruise ship calls to Auckland has risen 40%.”
“The development of a new international cruise terminal at Queens Wharf is the next step in building Auckland’s world class tourism appeal.”
The Pacific Pearl is a 63,500 tonne, 1800-passenger superliner and will be launched in Auckland on 19 December next year.
Ports of Auckland supports the cruise industry through berthage, marine and logistics services on the Waitemata Harbour.
The Port’s Marine Services team manages the logistics of every cruise call, working with the ship’s New Zealand agent, hospitality and tourism providers, stevedores, Customs, MAF and other agencies, to ensure each call goes smoothly.

It is New Zealand’s leading import port and a key partner to export and import industries, major cruise port and vehicle import hub. The Ports of Auckland is 100%-owned by Auckland Regional Holdings.
