Getting hooked on creative fish
ROTORUA 19.10.09: Rotorua’s annual ‘Fish Out of Water’ competition is returning for the fourth time, and local artists, community groups and families are invited to submit their vision for creating a fantastic, funky or fanciful fish.
The one-metre-long decorated fibreglass fish are placed around the central city over the summer, forming a colourful trail. Residents and visitors are then invited to vote for their favourite fish creation.
Rotorua District Council community arts officer Kiri Jarden says the fish are fun and festive, and are inspired by the local trout fishery and Rotorua’s beautiful Rotorua lakes and rivers.
“The fish have made quite a splash over the past three years, with some amazing creations by all sorts of people from throughout the community. Past winners include an emo fish, a mosaic fish, and a fish decorated with wallpaper.
“A number of fish remain on display at the Aquatic Centre, so anyone looking for inspiration can go and check them out.”
Anyone interested in entering needs to register their fish ideas with Kiri Jarden by Monday 9 November. Those with the most creative entries will be provided with a fibreglass fish to work on and decorate by Thursday 10 December.
Entry forms are available from Rotorua District Council’s customer centre, City Focus, District Library and RAVE.
