Joint Project Aims to Shape Marfell’s Future

A community-driven project to reshape Marfell will be launched in the suburb tomorrow (WEDNESDAY).

Marfell residents and representatives of Ngati Te Whiti, Housing New Zealand and New Plymouth District Council will attend the launch of Future Marfell, with the aim of creating an environment that enhances the community.

Issues to be discussed by the entire community include the placement and style of new Housing New Zealand homes in the Banks Street/Discovery Place area, the size and placement of recreation reserves and possible new road entrances.

Other topics include Marfell’s identity, the suburb’s streetscape and its services.

“Tomorrow’s launch will introduce the topics of discussion to all Marfell residents and kick off the consultation and feedback phase – we want the residents to help direct the future shape of Marfell,” says Mayor Peter Tennent.

“From a Council perspective we want this Future Marfell project to unify and strengthen the community. This gives residents the opportunity to take ownership of their suburb, find their own solutions and make the most of the opportunities in front of them.

“Marfell has a lot to be proud of, and this Future Marfell is a great way for the residents to express that pride.”

Housing New Zealand has recently removed 26 units from the area to reduce state housing density in the suburb and to free up land for any new housing or community developments, depending on what was decided.

Manawatu Taranaki Wairarapa Regional Manager Peter McKenna says the corporation is excited about the project and is looking forward to working alongside the community, Council and iwi to help transform the community.

“Housing New Zealand has been working in Marfell for a long time and knows the community well,” says Mr McKenna.

“It also knows the potential Marfell has to become a great place to live. This project has been a long time in the making so it is fantastic that it is finally about to begin.”

Tomorrow’s launch starts at 10am at the Banks/Discovery intersection. (If wet, the launch will be held in the Marfell Community School hall.)
