Groundbreaking ceremony for Okareka sewerage schem

Groundbreaking ceremony for Okareka sewerage scheme this week

ROTORUA 02.11.09: The official groundbreaking ceremony for the Okareka/Blue Lake sewerage scheme is taking place on Thursday [5 November].

The $10.5 million sewerage scheme construction programme will help improve and preserve water quality in three of the district’s most popular lakes.

The ceremony, at the intersection of Tarawera and Long Mile roads from 10am to 12pm, will include a karakia and welcome, followed by the groundbreaking by Rotorua mayor Kevin Winters, Councillor Glenys Searancke, assisted by representatives from contractor Downer EDI Works.

It is the first of two new sewerage schemes to replace septic tanks throughout a number of lakeside communities.

One scheme will introduce reticulated sewerage for residents in the Lake Okareka and Blue Lake areas, and is expected to take 50 weeks to complete. While the second scheme will cover residents in the Okere Falls, Otaramarae and Whangamarino areas on Lake Rotoiti, and is expected to take 70 weeks.
