UCLA Urges Fast Track For TCDC 1080 Policy Review
The Upper Coromandel Landcare Association (UCLA) is urging that a proposed review of TCDC policy on aerial use of toxin 1080 be fast-tracked by council at its meeting in Thames this week.
TCDC councillors will consider a proposal by Councillor Dal Minogue to seek out community opinion on the use of 1080 and to take an active advocacy stance with regional council and DOC that reflects the dominant public view of district residents.
UCLA spokesperson Reihana Robinson said a review of TCDC policy regarding the supertoxin is urgently needed and would follow similar action in recent months by district councils in Taupo, Westland, Marlborough, Kaikora, Dunedin.
“What is at stake is no less than the long-term public health of residents, the purity of our drinking water, and the delicate balance of our peninsula ecosystems.” Robinson said. “And now with aerial 1080 drop happenings close to towns and recreational areas, the very basis of our Coromandel tourist economy is increasingly at risk.”
“While TCDC is not the consenting authority in respect of 1080 drops, residents are extremely concerned about use of this poison in our communities. Other councils have responded to growing concern about 1080, and it is urgently required that TCDC do likewise. Continued silence from councillors is not an option. A fast-track review of TCDC policy would be a welcome and positive first step.”
