Hawkins Theatre Hosts Show Me Shorts Film Festival

Hawkins Theatre Hosts Show Me Shorts Film Festival
• Best of Kiwi and Australian short films at Hawkins Theatre.

The Show me Shorts Film Festival 2009 will screen at the Hawkins Theatre - Papakura from 19 – 25 November, bringing Papakura audiences a versatile program of short films which are at the cutting edge of artistic creativity and technology.

Each year the Show me Shorts Film Festival receives hundreds of entries from both established and emerging film-makers, all of whom are vying to be one of the 40 selected to play in the festival and contend for the seven awards.

Festival director Gina Dellabraca says the final selection brings together a diverse range of themes and subjects from horror to comedy, drama to animation, and everything in between.

“The best short films convey one key idea, introduce us to a unique character, or finish with a twist. The time limit distils these stories to their essence and allows no time for superfluous elements. That’s what makes them so powerful,” she says.

The award winning Show me Shorts films of 2009 will be screened at the festival’s Papakura opening night, November 19, starting at 7.00 pm. The evening will include an opening speech, wine and cheese.

Themed sessions of the festival will screen from November 20-25 with each session featuring 5-8 short films complete with popcorn courtesy of Hawkins Theatre. For information on each themed session go to www.hawkinstheatre.co.nz or phone the office at Hawkins Theatre on (09) 297 7712.

“The high calibre of film-making has been deeply impressive. There is a bit of everything from rocking special effects to tender tearful moments… The team and I are so thrilled to be bringing you possibly our best line up of Kiwi and Australian films yet,” Ms Dellabraca says.

Hawkins Theatre manager Graeme Bennett says he is thrilled to be involved in the growth of the Show me Shorts Festival with the inclusion of Papakura as a festival location.

“As a theatre it is so important we get involved with festivals such as Show me Shorts. They really are a breeding ground for emerging talent and an environment of unbridled expansion within the arts. Hawkins Theatre is very excited to support such ventures.”
