Joint ventures help get the job done and often lead to a prosperous long-term relationship and that’s certainly the plan with Bike Taupo and Wairakei Resort and it’s an ideal partnership.
A recently opened track, built with Bike Taupo’s expertise, now meanders through the resort’s grounds and gives cyclists a gentle extension to the ride from Helistar through to Huka Jet. The track will eventually continue on to Lake Aratiatia.
“There aren’t many wide flat beginner trails in Taupo,” says Richard Balm, Bike Taupo President. “The Resort ride is lovely for families; it’s well sign-posted and easy to follow.
“People don’t have to ride all the way from Helistar either, they can park and ride from the resort.”
Next February, with sponsorship from Wairakei Resort, Bike Taupo plans to start work on new tracks that will link the resort, using their tunnel under State Highway One, to the more than 100km of tracks in Wairakei Park and Craters of the Moon
Biking is good for business, and newly appointed Wairakei Resort marketing manager, Maree Surrey, is keen to maximise on the opportunities that the new cycling tracks provide.
The resort is one of the first in Taupo to get Bike Taupo’s tick of approval as a provider of ‘cycle friendly’ accommodation and Ms Surrey says they’re definitely developing their cycling and coffee culture.
