Auckland Launches Vision Screening Clinic

Media release

For immediate release

29 November 2009

Free eye screening provided by OneSight Foundation volunteer optometrists were accessed by 46 of Auckland’s rough sleepers and homeless last Sunday at Auckland City Mission.

“After the screening, there are 27 patients who need a comprehensive eye test and this is being provided today at the OPSM store on Queen Street,” Auckland City Mission Homeless Team Leader Wilf Holt says.

Mr Holt said that the Mission takes a holistic integrated approach to its services, and the OneSight Vision Clinic was a valuable addition to the free health care service provided by the Mission’s Calder Centre to its homeless clients.

“Many of our clients have not had an eye test before. I suspect many of them have some degree of impairment, and will welcome the opportunity to have this addressed.”

“Where clients are identified as needing prescription glasses, OneSight and OPSM will donate new frames and lenses free of charge.” Wilf Holt says. “It’s a fantastic help.”

OPSM Queen Street practice manager, Gerardo Arriola, said his team is delighted to be able to donate their time as volunteers and assist with providing much needed eyecare.

“The Mission gives so much to people in need in Auckland, and we are very happy to give something back to them and their clients.”
