System offers instant access to road closure info
Hutt Valley road users can now get instant access to detailed and searchable emergency road closure information thanks to a new-look online mapping system.
Paul Nickalls, the Hutt Valley emergency management controller, says the map will be a great resource for residents, businesses and media whenever a civil defence emergency necessitates road closures.
“People can either search for a specific road to see if it’s closed or look for a point of interest like a train station, park or school to see whether the access roads are closed. The map will show whether a road is closed one or both ways, as well as evacuation and diversion routes.
“All the road closures are also summarised in an online table that includes extra information like the expected re-opening time.
“Because the information is web-based, it can be updated anywhere, anytime. This means we can provide immediate access to the most up to date details.”
The mapping system has been developed by Hutt City Council’s land information services team and is a significant enhancement of the previous system.
“The team has added functionality and search capabilities, and extended the map to include Upper Hutt”, says Paul.
Council will be looking at other applications for the technology including mapping road works and showing event-related road closures.
The map will be available via the Hutt City and Upper City Council websites in an emergency.
