Pest mgmnt strategy to look at boundary pest rules

MEDIA RELEASE

Pest management strategy to re-look at boundary pest rules

For immediate release: 10 December 2009

Environment Bay of Plenty’s Planning and Policy committee has today looked at what is defined as a pest and how the regional council intends to work with landowners and the community to eradicate, control and assist people to manage pests in the region.

The committee agreed to re-look at the boundary pest rules following submissions on Managing Pests in the Bay of Plenty.

The committee also wishes to investigate further whether nitrogen-leaching plants such as gorse in priority catchments should be categorised as pests; if coarse fishing should be banned; and if wilding pines need to be identified as pests.

Council received 53 submissions and comments from public forums. From here, the regional council will write a draft Regional Pest Management Strategy, which will be released in July 2010 for public consultation.
