Grim reality of drink driving the focus of Road Safety Ambassadors
ROTORUA 11.12.09: Rotorua District Council (RDC) has mounted an alcohol awareness road safety campaign urging the public to make the right choices when it comes to drink driving.
Road Safety Ambassadors and Rotorua Police will be taking their safety messages to the streets over the next few weeks, encouraging people to act responsibly this holiday season.
RDC road safety coordinator Jodie Lawson says the team, accompanied by its Grim Reaper-like mascot, will be distributing information and chocolates throughout the CBD to support the campaign’s message, ‘Drink OR Drive, you decide’. They will also be asking the public to complete a quiz based on their knowledge of alcohol statistics with various prizes up for grabs.
“It’s the festive season with many local people attending Christmas functions, barbeques, and social activities. Combined with the warmer weather, these kinds of events often go hand-in-hand with a cold drink or two,” says Ms Lawson.
“We’re not saying ‘don’t drink’. But we are saying ‘don't drive if you do drink’. Be responsible and organise a safe ride home each time you celebrate. There can be serious consequences to drink driving – but good decisions can save lives.”
Keep an eye out for Road Safety Ambassadors in the central city from Monday 14 to Thursday 31 December.
