Summer Festival Of Music Begins

Taupo’s summer music festival kicks off on New Year’s Eve with an additional two concerts on January 2nd and 3rd at Riverside Park Unison Amphitheatre.

In addition to the traditional fireworks, the free New Year’s Eve concert will feature cover bands Triple J and Sharmin while the Lightning Rider will produce 2 metre long lightning bolts from the tips of his fingers.

Triple J has played internationally and to crowds of 30,000 in Cathedral Square while Sharmin will wow crowds with music from ‘The Eagles’ through to ‘Living Colour’ with their stunning musical talent and arrangement and tight harmonies.

A mere two days later, the music will continue in Taupo when Gin Wigmore joins Dave Dobbyn on January 2nd – Dobbyn’s ’30 Years of Hits’ concerts have sold-out in cities nationwide and he has added five new locations including Taupo and newcomer Gin Wigmore to his line-up.

Presented by Classic Hits, Dobbyn will perform live with his six-piece band covering his best-loved songs from his last 30 years of touring.

Tickets for the Dobbyn and Wigmore concert are available from Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.co.nz or 0800 111 999) at a cost of $29.50 each or are available at the gate for $35 each.

The fun continues on January 3rd with the first of the five free Summer Series of concerts – Alzarae will perform renditions of well-known classics from Andrew Bocelli, remakes by Il Divo, Michael Buble and play jazz, swing and their own modern twists on great songs.

“We are pleased to add another element to the traditional Kiwi summer in Taupo – family, friends and, now, great music with no less than 8 concerts over this summer!” said the Taupo District’s Manager of Event Marketing Warwick Hall.

“The Summer Series concerts will start at 6pm every Sunday evening, an hour later than last year to give people more time to pack their picnics, buy a bottle of wine and join us on the grass – the alcohol ban has been lifted for these concerts,” continued Hall.

The free series of Sunday evening concerts continues until January 31st. For more information about Taupo’s summer of music, please go to www.summerseriestaupo.co.nz
