Waikato River Challenge Complete

Waikato River Challenge Complete

A triumphant Frank in good spirits after finally completing the Waikato River challenge

Frank Way has completed kicking and paddling the length of the Waikato River, raising thousands for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
Papamoa man Frank Way has finally completed kicking and paddled his way along the 425 kilometre Waikato River, finishing at Port Waikato on the 3rd of January.

The journey began in Taupo on the 12th of December and the plan was to reach the end at Port Waikato by Christmas Eve. However, on the 21st of December, Frank’s journey was halted after severe chaffing caused an infection in the back of his knee sand lower back. The Doctor ordered Frank out of the water just shy out of Ngaruawahia. Frank vowed to complete the expedition as soon as he could get back in the water after Christmas.

On January the 1st 2010 Frank returned to the point where his journey came to an end and was determined to get back in the water to complete the journey. The first leg of the expedition had caused nerve and tendon damage to his foot preventing him from kicking, but not one to let obstacles get the better of him, in true kiwi ‘can-do’ style Frank opted for a long surfboard instead of a river-sled – meaning he would be completing the journey using only his arms.

Despite his injuries Frank Way was still able to complete paddling the length of the river with 12 days in the water.

“I am so pleased to have finished – I’m absolutely shattered and my body is shot – but it’s a good feeling” said Frank.

“I just want to thank everyone for their amazing support along the way and want to acknowledge the Prostate Cancer Foundation for all the work they are doing in supporting men, like my father, who have prostate cancer”.

Frank Way was fundraising for the Prostate Cancer Foundation along the way and has raised over $5,000 for the cause, with more money still coming in.
