Soul in the system at historic Fyffe House
Visitors are sure to have a whale of a time at a family concert in Kaikoura this weekend, with leading Christchurch band Soulsystem the headline act.
New Zealand Historic Places Trust property Fyffe House is host to the Summer Concert on the Lawn event on Saturday, 16 January from 2pm to 7pm, an annual fixture that has proved very popular with locals and visitors.
Thanks to generous funding from the Eureka Foundation entry is just $5, with children aged 15 and under getting in for free.
Fyffe House property manager Ann McCaw says the Summer Concert on the Lawn is the perfect time to relax outdoors for families and individuals.
“The concert provides a relaxing musical event, in a safe and friendly environment with a stunning physical setting. With a variety of music from highly skilled, engaging musicians, we want to see everyone up and dancing as they did at last year’s concert.
“In the past we have had mainly out of town musicians but this year, besides Soulsystem, the rest are local performers.”
Soulsystem formed in 2007 as an experimental fusion between reggae and blues, and has since established itself as an up and comer in the reggae/dub scene. The band’s first recording, the ‘Rise EP’ was released in March 2008 and received favourable airplay.
Soulsystem has featured alongside with top New Zealand acts including Salmonella Dub, Katchafire, Tahuna Breaks and Herbs.
Fyffe House is Kaikoura’s oldest building. Built on whalebone foundations, the original cottage was built in 1842 as part of the Waiopuka whaling station. It has remained virtually unchanged since it was extended by George Fyffe and wife Catherine in about 1860. It is open daily from 10am to 6pm in summer.
The alternative venue for the concert if the weather is poor will be the Memorial Hall on the Esplanade.
