Domestic Violence Agency shine* Call For Donations Of Old Mobile Phones To Keep High Risk Women And Children Safe

13 January 2010, AUCKLAND: shine*, New Zealand’s largest domestic violence agency, starts the New Year with a major push to collect unwanted mobile phones. Many people will have received new phones for Christmas which means there will be thousands of disused mobiles lying around in people’s drawers and cupboards.

shine* is appealing for working mobile phones to give to high risk women who have no access to a landline or a mobile phone of their own. A new SIM card is provided to access either the shine* helpline or emergency services.

Executive Director of shine* Jane Drumm, says: “Many people will have received a new mobile phone for Christmas and are probably wondering what to do with their old one. We have the solution – by simply donating your old mobile phone you will be helping to support women and children across the country affected by domestic violence.

“Several organisations collect old phones and send them overseas to on sell or melt down, in return they receive a small sum. However by donating to shine* the phones are instantly reused within New Zealand, this is not only better for the environment, it also can save a life.”

Mobile phones need to be in working order along with a charger. They can be posted to shine* at PO Box 90279, Victoria St West, Auckland or brought to the shine* office between the hours of 8am to 5pm.
