Walk For Hector's - 4, 5, 6 March 2010
One Month To Aescleah's Walk For Hector's - 4, 5, 6 March 2010
Walk for Hector's is an inspiring and positive community event led by 15 year old Christchurch school student Aescleah Hawkins (Aescleah is pronounced: Ashley) to raise funds and awareness for the protection of New Zealand's endangered Hector's dolphins.
Aescleah's Walk for Hector's is a three day, 42 kilometre sponsored walk from Lyttelton Harbour to Akaroa, two locations where the rare dolphins are found, taking place 4, 5, 6 March.
Hector's dolphins are amongst the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphins, and due to human actions the species is now threatened with extinction.
As well as raising vital funds for WWF's campaign to stop the extinction of Hector's dolphins, Aescleah hopes her Walk for Hector's will make more people aware of the plight of Hector's dolphins, and that something must be done, or New Zealand could be the first country in the world to let a marine dolphin become extinct. Aescleah has inspired 12 people to take up the Walk for Hector's challenge with her, ranging from a leader of New Zealand's tourism industry, to local Christchurch councillors.
