Great Go-Kart Race main event at fun day
ROTORUA 16.02.10: Adults are being invited to re-visit their youth with their kids at next month’s Rotorua Bunning's Great Go-Kart Race along Long Mile Rd at the Redwoods.
The race is to be the main event at Rotorua District Council's annual Children's and Family Fun Day at The Redwoods, which also includes a celebrity race.
The Redwoods/Whakarewarewa Forest manager Julianne Wilkinson says the event provides a challenging, enjoyable activity for adults and children as they work together on their carts before racing them.
“Go-carts can be made of anything, as flash or as basic as you like, and must include some recycled materials. The competition allows for creative bonding amongst family members, before competing against other families in a fun and exciting environment.”
The $5 entry fee and collections from the day will go to the Rotorua Hospital Children's Ward Trust.
“We decided the day could also be a way to provide support for children who couldn't make it to events such as this because of illness or accident.
“By using this fun day to raise funds for the Rotorua Hospital Children's Ward Trust we can provide hospitalised kids with fun resources to make their stay in the hospital a bit more bearable,” says Julianne.
The race will involve the adult pushing the cart along the Long Mile Rd track while the child steers. The three race categories are 5–7 years, 8–10 years, and 11–14 years. Mayor Kevin Winters will compete in the celebrity race with around eight local identities, each with a nominated child.
“There will be top prizes for first three places in each category, as well as prizes for most creative, most colourful, and best overall theme, including race outfits. So even if your cart isn’t the fastest, there’s still plenty of incentive to enter.”
Bunnings is holding a ‘get started’ workshop on go-kart building on Wednesday 17 February from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.
The 2010 Rotorua Bunnings Great Go-Kart Race will take place on Sunday 7 March at 1pm at the Children’s & Family Fun Day at The Redwoods.
