Boating Family Enjoys Memorable Summer

A Stanmore Bay family has had a summer they will never forget since winning a boating package worth $32,000 in the Discover Boating promotion that ran in the Sunday Star-Times late last year.

Kim Bayes entered the Discover Boating competition after her husband Stefan saw it in the paper and said “that’s exactly what we want”.

The package included everything needed to discover boating: a 5.05m Dominator from one of New Zealand’s leading manufacturers Fi-Glass Boats powered by a Yamaha 70hp oil-injected 2-stroke outboard motor, a trailer and accessory package from Diversified Products with an anchor, chain, warp, two Line 7 jackets, paddle, boat hook, outboard flag, motor, flusher, fire extinguisher and 54 inch ski tube.

Since taking ownership of the boat in December, the Bayes – Kim, 31, Stefan, 35, Cassie, 5 and Joshie, 2 – have spent almost every weekend out on the water.

“We’ve tried to spend as much time using and enjoying the boat as possible while the weather is good.

“It has definitely changed our family’s lifestyle. Having a boat allows us to share more quality time together doing something we all love,” she says. “There’s something really special about getting outdoors, discovering new places and watching our kids take to the water.”

With two young children to think of, Kim has a few key boating tips for other parents.

“Always make sure you have lots of food and drink onboard, that their life jackets fit properly and that you slip, slop, slap throughout the day!”

Although summer is drawing to a close, the Bayes aren’t planning to keep their boat on dry land over the cooler months.

“As long as the weather holds, I’d love to think we’ll keep boating throughout winter,” says Kim.

Discover Boating is a national awareness campaign being rolled out by the Marine Industry Association of New Zealand to inspire Kiwis unfamiliar with boating to dip their big toes in and experience what the ultimate leisure activity has to offer.
