Welfare Centre Training in Stratford

On March 3 2010, Welfare Centre training is being held in Stratford at the War Memorial Centre from 6.00pm to 7.00pm.

This session is a Practical Exercise session which allows experienced volunteers from New Plymouth to guide people through important training in order to set up and run an Emergency Welfare Centre in Stratford.

“The Stratford Emergency Welfare Centre would be set up in an emergency that affected the Stratford District and required evacuation of people from their homes, or caring for stranded travellers” says Taranaki CDEM Recovery Manager, Louise McLay.

With Stratford being the closest township to Mount Taranaki, and on the main highway North and South of Taranaki the knowledge and experience in setting up these kinds of emergency help stations are important for the community to be aware of.

People are encouraged to get involved and come along to the session. Louise McLay ensures, “It is not difficult, it is interesting and it is quite fun! We even provide a cuppa and chocolate biscuit or two as well!”

New Zealand has a number of Welfare Centres active around the country. With a recent example being the road closure on the Taupo – Napier road due to heavy snow fall last year. Emergency Welfare centres were set up at short notice to look after hundreds of stranded travellers.

Unfortunately it is something that communities need to be prepared for and this training session will provide the reassurance that our community is in confident hands if an emergency strikes.
