Threat to the Auckland region cancelled
Tsunami advisory: Threat to the Auckland region
cancelled
The Auckland Civil Defence
Emergency Management Group has been advised that there is no
further tsunami risk to the Auckland region from the 8.8
magnitude earthquake that occurred near the coast of central
Chilie on Saturday evening.
However, there is still a likelihood of strong currents and tidal effects in coastal areas for the rest of the day, therefore people are advised to continue to take caution in coastal areas.
Auckland’s Civil Defence Group Controller, Harry O’Rourke felt that overall the public’s response across Auckland was excellent.
“Collectively we’ve come along way with our readiness for and understanding of these events, and I think it’s beginning to show. While we still have a few people who choose to ignore the warnings, by far the great majority of people heeded the warnings and advice and acted accordingly. A big thanks to the Auckland Police for their timely and full response to the warning and who helped us keep our communities safe.”
I’d also like to give a special thanks to the media; radio and television in particular, who were absolutely excellent at keeping the public informed throughout the warning period.”
