Fair review for Pencarrow duck hunting supported
Fish & Game supports United Future leader Peter Dunne’s call for a thorough review of any potential environmental impacts of duck hunting on Pencarrow Lakes.
Hunting has been banned by the Wellington iwi Organisation Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trustees on unsubstantiated grounds. Duck hunting has occurred on the Pencarrow Lakes for 80 years, with no evidence of an adverse environmental effects.
Peter Dunne is calling for the status quo to continue for the upcoming gamebird season, and for a thorough evidence-based investigation into any environmental impacts of duck hunting to be carried out during and after the season. Decisions on the future of recreational hunting can be made then.
“Hunting on the lakes occurs over eight weekends, or 16 days in the year,” said Bryce Johnson, Chief Executive, New Zealand Fish & Game Council. “Peter Dunne’s suggestion is a sensible, fair and will result in a robust solution.”
