Positive Focus On Youth In Papakura

Positive Focus On Youth In Papakura

Papakura young people are in focus this year with the announcement of the second annual Papakura Youth Awards and a continued high profile for the Papakura Youth Leadership Forum, which is now into its fourth year.

The Youth Leadership Forum is a two year programme that builds understanding among young people in a fun team environment. It is a partnership between Papakura District Council, Papakura High School and Rosehill College that aims to build civic awareness through a range of initiatives and discussion topics, and to help develop the skills of young people who have been identified by their schools as potential youth leaders.

The next generation of Papakura’s community leaders and volunteers may well emerge from the ranks of a group of students who recently celebrated their involvement in the Papakura Youth Leadership forum. Students who have been part of previous programmes have gone on be student leaders, head students and prefects.

Students of Papakura High School and Rosehill College are again taking part in the forum and have already begun work on the 2010 Papakura Youth Awards.

Nominations are now open for the Youth Awards. Now in their second year, the awards celebrate the achievements of the District’s young people in many areas: academic, arts, sporting, community service and leadership.

Organisers are inviting nominations and are also seeking support from local businesses in the form of sponsorship of award categories. Award nominees must be resident in the district and aged between 13 and 18.

The awards will be presented in an evening ceremony at the Hawkins Theatre on 20 August.
