Call For Hillary House To Be Relocated To Trail

Call For Hillary House To Be Relocated To Hillary Trail Renewed

13 April 2010

Auckland Regional Council Chairman Mike Lee has renewed his call for Sir Edmund Hillary’s house to be relocated to the Hillary Trail on Auckland’s west coast.

“I believe that is the best option for the house. It could be used by people walking the multi-day trail for overnight stays, and maintained and managed as part of the ARC’s network of regional park baches,” said Mr Lee.

“The Sir Edmund Hillary School could still use the house for outdoor education purposes, as well as many other schools.”

Mr Lee said Sir Ed was passionate about the west coast and Waitakere Ranges.

“Sir Ed and his father in law Jim Rose often discussed how wonderful a tramping trail along the west coast would be.

“The ARC developed the trail in honour of Sir Ed so that others could enjoy the magnificent coast that he and his family found so inspiring.

“The house is a part of New Zealand’s recent history. It deserves to be preserved and used in a fitting way that honours Sir Ed, his family and those associated with his exploits.

“New Zealand does not have a good track record when it comes to respecting its past, particularly its buildings.

“We have an excellent opportunity to do something appropriate with Sir Ed’s house. I call on others to support this proposal and work with the ARC to make it happen.”
