Greyhounds As Pets Condemns Christchurch Greyhound Killing
Greyhounds as Pets media release 15 April 2010
Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) is horrified at the death one of its greyhounds in Christchurch.
Six-year-old greyhound Shorty was found with severe head injuries on Sunday morning, close to the Wainoni home of the family who adopted her. Police suspect she was killed deliberately.
GAP helps find homes for greyhounds throughout New Zealand to give them the chance of life after racing. After the end of her racing career, Shorty was adopted through the GAP programme a year and a half ago.
GAP Director, Jacqui Eyley says it’s tragic that a happy retirement was cut short.
“After finding a new home, and settling in as a family pet, Shorty had the promise of a wonderful life. We’re shocked and disgusted that anyone could commit this crime. We’re encouraging all dog owners to make sure their gates are particularly secure at this time.”
A $1,000 reward is being offered by animal rights organisation, Paw Justice, to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest of the culprit(s).
Shorty’s owner, Amy Price, is urging anyone with information to come forward immediately.
“If anybody knows anything please, please contact the police so it doesn't happen again. Shorty was a wonderful dog, a lovely friend and totally trusting of strangers.
“Greyhounds are gentle by nature, and Shorty was one of the friendliest dogs I've met. We’re devastated to lose her and it’s gut wrenching to know she was deliberately attacked.”
Anyone with information on Shorty’s death should contact Constable Brian Scanlan, of the New Brighton police on 03 373 9100.
