From Village Vicar To Bishop Of Auckland In Just Two Years

An Auckland community is so proud that its former vicar, Ross Bay, was today ordained the Bishop of Auckland for the Anglican Church.

“This is a meteoric rise to the top. We are so proud of Ross and he is so worthy of this very senior position. He is an outstanding person who will be a great Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland,” says Cameron Brewer, chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association.

“Ross Bay was Newmarket’s local vicar, at St Mark’s Church on Remuera Road, until November 2007. He was then appointed Dean of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, with his first big job to preside over the funeral of Sir Edmund Hillary in January 2008. At 1pm today he was ordained the 11th Bishop of Auckland with much pageantry in front of about 1,000 people at the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

“It’s amazing to think that just over two years ago Ross was effectively a village vicar, albeit an outstanding one. Now he’s one of the most senior clergymen in New Zealand. Who ever said going into the Church was not a career path?

“Ross was great for Newmarket and Remuera, and was a star as Dean of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell. He’s now going to be a huge asset for the whole of the Auckland Diocese, with includes Northland,” says Cameron Brewer.
