MEDIA RELEASE

Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust secures Lottery funding for Te Wao Nui

The Internal Affairs Minister the Rt Hon Nathan Guy has today announced that a grant of $2.694,000 from the Lottery Significant Projects Fund has been given to the Auckland Zoo Charitable Trust to complete its fundraising towards the new Te Wao Nui development at the Auckland Zoo.

Chair of the Zoo Trust, Penny Whiting MBE, is thrilled with the news. “I am delighted that the NZ Lottery Grants Board shares our vision with the Auckland Zoo and the other major funders of the project to create a unique NZ journey of discovery”.

“The Zoo Trust commenced fundraising for Te Wao Nui in August 2007 and has consistently had amazing support. There is a real need to have a place to showcase our fauna, flora and culture, as well as engage zoo visitors about the zoo’s involvement in New Zealand-wide conservation projects.”

The Zoo Trust is an independent Charitable Trust that seeks funding for major capital projects associated with the Auckland Zoo. It was established in 1992 and since then has raised over $10M for numerous developments including the refurbishment of the Old Elephant House and the building of the cutting edge NZ Centre for Conservation Medicine.

Penny and her fellow trustees are thrilled that the work of the Zoo Trust will help the zoo to deliver what will be a unique, world-class New Zealand experience.

The Lottery Significant Projects Fund grant will ensure that Te Wao Nui is a world class facility to be experienced and enjoyed by over 650,000 visitors a year coming to the Auckland Zoo.
