Lake Road main works kicking off during May

Lake Road main works kicking off during May

With most of the enabling (pre-roading) works now complete, the main works to improve Lake Road between Jutland Road and Napier Avenue are starting soon.

The project, which will continue through to mid 2011, aims to provide significant safety and traffic flow benefits for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

In order to reduce congestion during the road works, the council is now allowed to do some work in the early morning and in the evening, outside peak travel times.

Mayor Andrew Williams says the council will work closely with the contractor and the community to minimise the impacts on residents.

He says that the change in the project’s designation conditions should help reduce traffic delays caused by lane closures, and should allow the project to be completed in 12 months rather than the originally expected 15.

However he cautions that despite the designation change there may still be delays - as sometimes happens with any roadworks project.

“We will keep road users informed as much as possible regarding any expected delays with the use of radio, signage and web-updates.

“However, people should start thinking of alternatives such as public transport and car-pooling in order to ease congestion and avoid delays.”

To help people find out about transport options, the council is offering free, one-on-one travel advice. The Personal Journey Plan service is available for residents who live between Devonport and Takapuna. Email travelsmarter@northshorecity.govt.nz to book a space.

Fulton Hogan, who completed the pre-roading works, has been awarded the roadworks contract and are onsite preparing for the final push.

Over the next few months the project will start to take shape with road widening on Lake Road’s west side (northbound towards Takapuna), the installation of a new pedestrian crossing, stormwater drainage upgrades and landscaping.
