Passion Over Wakeboard Cableway at Aotea Lagoon

Passion Over Wakeboard Cableway at Aotea Lagoon

A proposal to lease part of Aotea Lagoon for a wakeboard cableway, café, and pro-shop attracted a huge response with over 1000 submissions received by the Council.

"This response to the proposed wakeboarding cableway is a great example of democracy in action," says Council's Manager Leisure Assets and Services Karyn Stillwell.

"People are passionate about Aotea Lagoon. In a recent survey of 500 local residents about the city's parks and reserves, the majority voted Aotea Lagoon their favourite park. So it's not surprising that the cableway proposal has attracted a lot of interest," she says.

Karyn says the quality of the submissions was of a very high standard.

"People put a lot of effort into their submissions and I'd like to thank them for getting involved. The majority wrote substantive submissions - both for and against the proposal. Of the 1060 useable submissions received (27 were illegible or incomplete) 62% supported the proposal and 38% opposed. However, of the submissions from Porirua residents alone, 34% were in support and 66% opposed."

She says almost half the submissions came from the greater Wellington region (454 - outside of Porirua City), while 43 came from other parts of the country and 11 from overseas.

Copies of all the submissions are available for the public to view at the Council's Customer Service Centre and at the city libraries.

So far 58 people have asked to speak to their submissions during hearings being held next week on Monday 17 May, 1pm-7.30pm; Tuesday 18 May, 9am-10am and Thursday 20 May, 1pm-7.30pm.
