City Vision Selects Council Candidates for Albert-Eden-Roskill Ward
City Vision has selected Cathy Casey and Glenda Fryer as Council candidates for the Albert-Eden-Albert ward of the new Auckland Council. City Vision Chair Robert Gallagher said “Cathy Casey and Glenda Fryer are experienced Councillors with a proud record of working for their local communities. City Vision is pleased to have such strong candidates standing. They make a formidable team and will ensure that the “Supercity” works for the people of Albert-Eden-Roskill”
Councillor Cathy Casey says she is delighted to be selected and has enormous passion and energy to bring to the new Auckland Council, “I want to ensure we create a democratic, inclusive and welcoming new super city where local people are able to influence decision making.”
A former chair of the Council’s Community Development & Equity Committee, she believes that building communities and providing quality community facilities - libraries, community centres, halls and recreation centres - are key parts of council’s role.
“We need to encourage our young people to participate in positive ways which is why community facilities like the new Youth Centre at Wesley in Mt Roskill are so important. We must also harness the experience and energy of older people in the community who have so much to contribute. The new Super City has a vital part to play in ensuring people from all communities are fully involved in decision making in the future so that they get a fair share of this region’s resources.”
Councillor Glenda Fryer says there are enormous issues facing the impending super city which need experienced councillors who know Auckland city and the suburbs of Albert, Eden and Roskill well.
“There are very real immediate challenges facing the incoming Council with sale or privatisation at the top of the list. The Government will soon legislate for Council Controlled Organisations (CCO) to take over the responsibilities of 80 per cent of the expenditure in transport, recreation, property, CBD waterfront and stadiums and culture like our Museum and Art Gallery. My 12 years of governance experience will assist me in forging the Statements of Corporate Intent that will ensure that Auckland’s assets cannot be set up for sale or privatisation.”
Glenda has experience in the planning and city development challenges the Auckland Council will face, as a Chair of the Planning Committee of Council.
Robert Gallagher said “At a time of great change in the nature, power and form of local government in Auckland, local experienced sitting councillors like Cathy and Glenda, who know the concerns of the community and have experience, will be vital to ensuring that Albert-Eden-Roskill residents are strongly represented on the new city.”
