New Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel Arrives in Auckland
HMNZS WELLINGTON arrived at Devonport Naval Base to an emotional Navy haka performed by fleet personnel.
Onboard for the arrival were the Honourable Heather Roy, Associate Minister of Defence, and Commodore Ross Smith the Maritime Component Commander. Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae, the Chief of Defence Force and Commodore Bruce Pepperell, Deputy Chief of Navy greeted the ship as it berthed.
Commanding Officer of HMNZS WELLINGTON, Lieutenant
Commander Simon Griffiths said on arrival, “WELLINGTON,
like her recently arrived sister ship OTAGO, is a great
asset for RNZN and NZDF. It is going to deliver a
substantial new capability to surveillance patrols and
military support operations throughout New Zealand, the
South Pacific, and the Southern Ocean.”
WELLINGTON, an offshore Patrol Vessel, is the seventh and last ship in the Project Protector fleet, and with her delivery the Navy will be operating a fleet of 12 modern and highly capable ships.
