Top of the Pups’ names in Auckland city

Top of the Pups’ names in Auckland city

Max and Bella are currently the most popular dog names for Auckland city dogs, according to dog registration records held by Auckland City Council. Dog registrations are due by 31 July 2010, and it remains to be seen what the next generation of puppies will be called.

More than 22,000 dogs call Auckland city home and almost 300 of them are called Max while 288 go by Bella. Close runners-up in the favourite name stakes are Molly, Jess, Jack, Oscar and Charlie

As well as collecting information on where dogs live, Auckland City Council also keeps records of all registered dogs’ names and breeds. Name trends often reflect the pop culture of the time with inspiration coming from the owner’s favourite television, music and movie characters. Registered names include Dora the Explorer, Marley, McDreamy, Darth Vadar, Fox Mulder and of course, Snoop Dog.

Dogs that like to stand out in a crowd are the uniquely named Berlios Rotunda Fancy Pup, Hijynx All About Dudley and Warwick Wait A Bit. Others are registered under a more generic moniker including five dogs simply named Dog, ten that are called Pup or Puppy, eleven that are called Girl and fifteen called Boy.

It remains to be seen what new dog names will be registered this year and whether Max and Bella are knocked off the top spot as dog registration for 2010/2011 opens this month.

Dog owners in Auckland city have until Saturday 31 July 2010 to register their dogs and receive up to one-third off the registration fee. Dog owners who register their dog after 31 July 2010 will incur higher registration fees and other penalties. For more information visit www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dogs.
