Keep it white despite change of kit colour

Plea to keep it white despite All Whites now playing in black

The country’s leading shopping district Newmarket, which has blanketed itself white today, is telling people and businesses to stick with the 'white out' despite news that the All Whites will wear black when they play Paraguay at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, 2am tomorrow (Friday) morning NZT.

"We’re telling people not to let the black uniform deter them from whiting out. They are still the All Whites and so we must stick to being all white. What’s more it’s not too late to get into the spirit and show the All Whites just how proud we all are,” says Cameron Brewer, chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association.

Many Newmarket shops and businesses have already committed to whiting out their shops and offices, which is attracting international media attention.

“The response we’ve had has been overwhelming. The likes of Broadway, Teed, Osborne, and Nuffield streets look fantastic. Newmarket Primary School pupils are decked out in white today, as are bank staff, and many shop assistants. Many shops have made a huge effort with their windows and they look great,” says organiser Lea Worth, marketing manager of the Newmarket Business Association.

“This is a great dress rehearsal for next year’s Rugby World Cup. It has shown us that we better stockpile black balloons for next October because Newmarket has already completely run out of white balloons,” says Mrs Worth.

“We’ve been blown away with people’s enthusiasm. The All Whites have really captured people’s hearts, minds and conversations. Us Kiwis by nature are not terribly demonstrative so it’s great to see so many literally wearing their pride on their sleeve,” says Cameron Brewer.
