Bus lane sign and marker trial underway today

Bus lane sign and marker trial underway today

Auckland City Council today launched a month-long trial of new signs and markers for bus lane education and enforcement.

At any one time the trial will operate at up to four bus lanes around Auckland, using a mix of new signs and road markers. Additional cameras will monitor the impact that each of the new measures has on driver compliance.

Resulting data will be analysed and reported to the September meeting of council’s Transport Committee to help councillors review issues around bus lane enforcement, education and notification.

About 36km of bus lanes have been introduced in Auckland city since 1997, helping to generate record levels of public transport patronage and reduce congestion, fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

During their hours of operation, bus lanes can only be used by buses, bicycles, motorcycles, motor scooters and mopeds. The NZTA Road User Rule stipulates that other vehicles should only cross a bus lane to safely turn into a side road or a driveway, using it for a minimum length necessary, and for no more than 50m (approximately the length of 10 cars), while giving way to buses.
