Political personalities support Cameron Brewer’s bid

Three well-known Auckland political personalities have thrown their weight behind independent council candidate Cameron Brewer’s bid to win the new Orakei ward on the Auckland Council.

Mr Brewer’s candidacy is being supported by a former borough mayor, David Lumsden, and iconic Kiwi musician Gray Bartlett who was a long-serving councillor, while Ann Simich is one of his nominators.

Businessman and former five-term Mayor of the Newmarket Borough Council, David Lumsden JP, says he is publicly supporting the Newmarket Business Association chief executive as the best choice for the future.

“Cameron Brewer has reinvigorated the whole Newmarket community. He has been an excellent leader of business and a highly successful advocate for better infrastructure. He has put Newmarket on the map and has fought every day for his members. Cameron has helped give Newmarket a real heart, supporting its schools, churches, heritage, and arts projects. He loves people and people love him. He will be sorely missed from Newmarket but he’ll make a fine councillor for Orakei,” says Mr Lumsden, Mayor of Newmarket from 1974 – 1989.

Mrs Ann Simich has nominated Mr Brewer for election. The businesswoman lives in St Heliers and is married to Hon Clem Simich who was the National MP for Tamaki from 1992 – 2005.

“I have followed Cameron Brewer’s progress for a number of years. He has done great things for Newmarket, and will be a excellent councillor for our area. He will be a strong voice for the local ratepayer and our community in the years ahead. Cameron is the right age, has plenty of energy and high-level experience. I am absolutely delighted to nominate him,” says Mrs Simich.

Gray Bartlett MBE, a Glendowie resident and a former Eastern Bays councillor, says despite earlier dropping hints that he would stand for Orakei in this election, the well known Kiwi musician and promoter is now actively supporting Cameron Brewer.

“I’m telling all my friends and supporters to vote Brewer. We’ve got to take a long-term view on this and I strongly believe Cameron is the one to take us forward. He knows how to champion community issues and get results. He’s also real and approachable, something that will be important under this massive new Auckland Council structure. I really hope he wins,” says Mr Bartlett, who served four terms on the Auckland City Council representing the Eastern Bays from 1989 – 2001.

The other person to nominate Mr Brewer is Auckland businesswoman Meegan Pollock, who lives in Orakei and owns Centrepoint Fabrics in Newmarket.
