Newmarket Viaduct Walkover Once In A Lifetime Opportunity
Tomorrow’s public walkover of the new southbound Newmarket viaduct structure has been described as a once in a lifetime opportunity, by the head of the Newmarket Business Association.
The bridge walk starts from St Mark’s Road onramp at 9am on Sunday (29 August), with the last pedestrian access at 2pm. Cyclists will be allowed on to the new viaduct at 2.45pm, when walkers have left. They will have 45 minutes to enjoy the 1.5km ride up and down the new viaduct.
“The last time the public walked over the Newmarket Viaduct was when it first opened in 1966. We’re expecting thousands of Aucklanders to take this great opportunity and in fact we’re also expecting a lot of dogs to join their owners. This is something that any child who walks it will never forget. The views up there are breathtaking and Aucklanders won’t get another chance for potentially a century,” says Mr Brewer, chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association.
“Next weekend we’ve got the big southbound closure, so this weekend we’re encouraging people to come to Newmarket and also enjoy our cafes and shops.”
The $215m NZTA viaduct replacement project will be complete in late 2012.
