NZTA Congratulated On Early Newmarket Viaduct Reopening
"NZTA is to be congratulated on a job well done. Its marketing and communications around the Newmarket Viaduct closure were first class. Aucklanders really heeded the advice to keep off the southbound motorway and that bodes well for any future closures," says Cameron Brewer, chief executive of the Newmarket Business Association.
"Cutting 17 hours off the planned motorway closure blew everyone's expectations. The crew of 50 who worked overnight up on the viaduct deserve a lot of praise and thanks.
"Auckland drivers have also played a massive role which allowed NZTA to just get on with the job. Aucklanders have now shown they can keep off the roads. The success of this closure bodes really well for the road closures associated with next year's Rugby World Cup and the 2012 northbound closure of the viaduct when NZTA switch over to the new structure and complete the project.
"Weekend traffic is the hardest to train because it's more unpredictable. However everyone took the advice and none of the worst case scenarios eventuated. Like NZTA, we were very nervous last week, but we're delighted with how the weekend panned out," says Cameron Brewer
