Stay clear of Canterbury tracks and visitor facilities until we’ve checked them, says Department of Conservation

People are being asked to stay clear of tracks and huts in the Canterbury area until the Department of Conservation (DOC) has checked their safety.

Fallen debris and damaged structures could pose a risk, said DOC Acting Southern General Manager Operations Mike Slater. DOC staff are currently carrying out detailed inspections and the public should avoid tracks, huts and other department facilities until the all clear is given.

The Pinnacles Hut track and the Staveley Lime Kiln near Mount Somers, plus the Otukaikino Reserve north of Christchurch are currently closed to the public due to structural damage.

“There’s a lot of country to check but we’re out there now, and we will provide updates as soon as we receive reports,” said Mike. “Area staff are busy with inspections and we’re also offering our help wherever emergency services or civil defence teams need us.”

DOC’s Canterbury Conservancy Office in Hereford Street will be closed until it has been fully checked for safety. All other DOC Canterbury Area offices are open, and staff are checking visitor facilities.
