Born and bred Shore boy epitomises community

6 September 2010

Born and bred on the North Shore, Greenhithe resident Chris Kemp epitomises the people-first attitude of many in the communities of Paremoremo, Hobsonville, Whenuapai, Albany, Herald Island and, of course, his own home village.

With a background in marketing, tourism, hospitality and events, the 42-year-old sport-loving father-of-three mixes his career as an Albany-based commercial manager with an active involvement in the local community.

He is coach and past committee member of the Greenhithe Junior Soccer Club and, more recently, a founding trustee and chairman of the Greenhithe Community Trust, formed to facilitate a healthy, vibrant and caring community.

Kemp also represents the “new blood” on the Shore Voice ticket in the upcoming local government elections, standing for a seat on the Upper Harbour Local Board.

“When I was approached by Margaret Miles and other Shore Voice team members who have done so much for us north of the bridge, it didn’t take me long to let my name go forward. I’ve never been involved in politics before but, to me, it’s just an extension of what I do in my personal and professional lives, that is to support the community,” he says.

“Local boards will have a massive role to play in the new Auckland Council set-up. While working at North Harbour Stadium for the past four years I have seen local government close up, and it can be frustrating viewing at times. It does, however, play a vitally important role in our lives and, as we enter the Super City era, it is more important than ever to protect and maintain the Shore lifestyles in which we’ve invested.

“From parkland to heavily-used sports fields and major community facilities, I know what it takes to run a city people love to live in,” says Kemp.

“These are hard-won gains I’ll be working to protect and enhance if given the opportunity to serve on my local board.”
