Parnell’s Mountain Fountain flows again

Inauguration ceremony at Holy Trinity Cathedral, Parnell Sunday 12 September, 5pm – 7.30pm

One of Auckland’s best known art works, Terry Stringer’s Mountain Fountain is being officially welcomed today to its new home in Auckland’s Creative Quarter, in the grounds of the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Parnell Inc., Parnell’s Business Association, Holy Trinity Cathedral, together with Auckland City Council is celebrating the arrival of the Mountain Fountain to its new home with a grand inauguration ceremony, on Sunday 12 September from 5.00pm.

“Over 400 people are expected to attend the celebration, with members of the Arts community, Auckland City Council councillors, Auckland Council candidates and members of the local community,” said Debbie Harkness, Manager for Parnell Inc.

The Mayor of Auckland city, Hon John Banks, QSO, will give an address. Terry Stringer will inaugurate the Mountain Fountain by turning on the sculpture’s fountain, while Ross Bay, Bishop of Auckland, will dedicate the sculpture.

As part of the ceremony, local school children from Parnell District School and Kathedral Kids will welcome the sculpture to its new prominent home by adding stream water collected from Parnell’s history rich Waipapa Stream to the fountain.

“As part of the celebration, the community is invited to enjoy a free concert in the Cathedral, featuring performance by internationally renowned Maori musician and artist, Whirimako Black, accompanied by oboist Russell Walder, and Parnell’s ‘Stars in their Eyes’s Billy Joel sound-alike Deryn Trainer,” said Ms Harkness. Light refreshments will be served in the Cathedral forecourt.

Parnell Inc. has played a key role in coordinating the celebration, with Ms Harkness adding “We are delighted to have this prominent location, in the heart of Parnell, chosen as the new home for Mountain Fountain. The sculpture continues our branding efforts as Auckland’s Creative Quarter and will be a major draw for Parnell.”

The Very Reverend Jo Kelly-Moore, recently installed as the new Anglican Dean of Auckland, said the addition of Mountain Fountain had made her arrival at Holy Trinity Cathedral even more memorable. “Mountain Fountain adds a wonderful dimension to the Cathedral and I look forward to seeing it become a gathering place for the people of Parnell and the Cathedral community,” she said.
