Community groups to share $25,600 council safety funds

ROTORUA 05.10.10: A handful of local community groups will receive a share of $25,600 from Rotorua District Council's (RDC) Community Safety Projects Fund.

The fund is to provide local not-for-profit organisations with financial support to implement new projects that will reduce and prevent crime, enhance positive perceptions of safety in the community, or better equip the organisation to do so.

RDC community safety projects officer Amy Royston says five applications for five projects were received for the most recent funding round, and all five were successful.

"It's pleasing to have received five quality applications and to be able to provide each group with a significant contribution to help towards the important community services they provide," she says.

Recipients of the latest Community Safety Projects Fund are:

* Western Heights Community Association will receive $3,000 for its Project Guardian which involve regular patrols that report truancy, burglaries, wilful damage and tourist related crimes to the appropriate authorities; * Western Heights Community Association, $9,100, for CACTUS (Combined Adolescent Training Unit and Support), an intensive physical training programme developed from the armed forces targeting local high school students; * The Sexual Abuse Centre, $5,000, for its Say No to Sexual Abuse project to create a local website to raise awareness of sexual abuse and provide people with the tools for recognising and reacting responsibly to sexual abuse; * Mahi Kai Outdoor Education Trust, $8,000, to run three school holiday programmes for local young people; and * Rotorua Multicultural Business Society, $500, to create resources for local migrant business owners on how to deal with difficult or aggressive customers.

The next funding round will open in September next year.
