AUT Students' Initiative to Stop Climate Change

5th October 2010

MEDIA RELEASE

AUT Students Take Initiative to Stop Climate Change

AUT Event Production students are gearing up to support for Oxfam’s Climate Change Campaign in a unique yet fashionable way.

Trade for Treasure is a sustainable op shop held in AUT’s Hikuwai Plaza on the 13th of October from 12pm to 2pm, and aims to draw in Pacific Youth to exchange old, unwanted clothing for a pre-loved, more desirable piece.

Trade for Treasure is a concept designed purely by the students as an inclusive part of the Wave of Change Campaign initiated by Oxfam.

Trade for Treasure’s team leader Emma White said this concept is an original way to attract university students and other youths while promoting environmental awareness.

“As a team, we have worked hard to ensure that the event we came up with is environmentally friendly and we are confident we can deliver a clear message about climate change to the participants.”

Climate change is one of the greatest injustices of our time – the first hit and worst affected are the people who have done the least to cause the problem, and are least equipped to deal with it.

Oxfam is working to help poor communities adapt to climate change through new technologies, diversifying livelihoods and disaster risk reduction.

The Wave of Change campaign aims to spread this message and incorporates numerous events that will be run by other AUT Event Production students.

Every semester AUT’s Event Production students work with local non profit organisations to produce events that are of benefit to the community.

The youth oriented community projects driven by university students bring the importance of education as well as, fun, music and laughter into the heart of the community.
