2010 Buggy Walk a Huge Success

Sport Wellington and Greater Wellington Regional Council celebrated their most successful Buggy Walk yet last Thursday 7 October. Over 1,000 mums, dads, caregivers and children took to the paths of Wellington’s Botanic Gardens in a communal buggy walk designed to exercise the mind as much as the body.

Event organiser Rachel Spriggens was very happy with this year’s event. “This year was the biggest turn out we have ever had. The day had a really nice family feel to it, after the walk the sun came out and people got to sit back and relax. It’s more than just a walk however with plenty of spot prizes and activities for everyone- a highlight of the day was having Fairy Trina along who has an amazing rapport with the children” says Miss Spriggens.

Participants massed at the Dell where they were treated to a ‘Buggy Fit’ warm up from City Fitness and a briefing and some banter from Classic Hits’ Breakfast Team Dave and Camille. From the Dell the group diverged along two gentle walks around the gardens, many walking at their own pace to allow for socializing or stopping for photo opportunities with the spring ducklings and tulips.

Once back at the Dell the entertainment continued with Fairy Trina running fun relays for keen kids and parents whilst others relaxed and caught up with playgroup or Plunket buddies over free Caffe L’affare coffee.

The Buggy Walk event has continued to grow since its introduction in 2006. The Monthly Buggy Walks culminate in a big yearly walk which coincides with the Botanic Gardens Spring Festival. The Buggy Walks have been recognised for their focus on providing a free community service by winning a Living Streets Aotearoa Golden Foot Award in 2009 for Best Small Walking Project.

The next monthly Buggy Walk is at 10.30am Thursday 4 November at Queen Elizabeth Park, Paekakariki. This is a very beautiful walk, which takes participants along a coastal track and then returning inland along a farm track.

All Buggy Walks are free and no registration is necessary
